The article is devoted to the insufficiently covered by historical and legal science issue of establishing the basics of land law in modern Ukraine. The scientific achievements in this field, developed by the Ukrainian scientist-lawyer O.S. Dobrov in the first half of the twentieth century. In particular, his scientific work is analyzed, which considers the peculiarities of the origin of land law in the Lithuanian-Ukrainian state of the XVI century. The author’s historical parallel between the process of differentiation of the originally single Grand Ducal land ownership into the then forms with their modern analogues, which are public, private and communal forms in their modern perception, is made.
